Pune Darshan Cab

Local Pune city sightseeing

Pune Darshan Cab — Full-Day City Sightseeing Tour by Private Car

Pune rewards the visitor who slows down. The city holds a Peshwa fortress, an eighth-century cave temple carved from a single basalt outcrop, the palace where Gandhi was interned and Kasturba died, and a Ganpati temple that draws devotees from across Maharashtra — all within a radius that a car can cover comfortably in a day.

Allied Car Rentals has been running Pune Darshan tours since 2001. What we offer is not a fixed circuit you join, but a private chauffeur-driven car for the day, pickup from your door, and an itinerary shaped around what you actually want to see.

Private Cab or Sightseeing Bus?

Most first-time visitors weigh the city sightseeing bus against a private cab. The bus is cheaper. What you give up is worth knowing before you decide.

The difference matters most if you are travelling with elderly parents or small children. Being able to cut a stop short, sit in an air-conditioned car between sites, and finish when you are tired rather than when the schedule says so is the whole argument for a private cab.

What a Pune Darshan Tour Covers

These are the sites our guests ask for most often. Your itinerary is built from them — you are not obliged to visit all of them.

Shaniwar Wada

The seat of the Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire, built in the 1730s. A fire in 1828 destroyed most of the interior, but the fortification walls and the massive Delhi Darwaza gate survive, and the foundations give a clear sense of the scale of what stood here. Allow around an hour.

Aga Khan Palace

Built in the 1890s by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III, and the place where Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai were interned during the Quit India movement. Kasturba and Mahadev Desai both died in confinement here, and their samadhis stand in the garden. The building now houses a Gandhi memorial. It is the most affecting stop on the circuit and deserves unhurried time.

Shreemant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple

Founded by the sweet-maker Dagdusheth Halwai after he lost his son to plague, and now among the most visited Ganpati temples in Maharashtra. Busiest during Ganesh Chaturthi and on Tuesdays. Worth timing early in the day if you want to avoid the longest queues.

Pataleshwar Cave Temple

An eighth-century Shiva temple cut directly into a single basalt outcrop, with a circular Nandi mandapa in front of it. It sits, improbably, just off Jangli Maharaj Road in the middle of modern Pune. Small, quiet, and frequently missed by visitors who do not know it is there.

Shinde Chhatri

The memorial to Mahadji Shinde at Wanowrie, in a hybrid Anglo-Rajasthani style with detailed stone carving throughout. Among the finest structures in the city and among the least crowded — one of the stops guests most often thank us for suggesting.

Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum

The lifetime collection of Dr Dinkar Kelkar: thousands of objects of everyday Indian life — lamps, writing instruments, textiles, musical instruments, kitchen vessels — assembled over decades. The reconstructed Mastani Mahal is the centrepiece. Closed on certain days, so we confirm before including it.

Parvati Hill and Saras Baug

A Peshwa-era temple complex reached by a flight of stone steps, with one of the better views across the city from the top. The climb is not long but is steep in places; guests with mobility difficulty may prefer to view it from the base. Saras Baug and its Ganpati temple sit at the foot of the hill and pair naturally with it.

Lal Mahal and Kasba Ganpati

Lal Mahal is associated with Shivaji Maharaj’s early years in Pune and with the encounter with Shaista Khan. The present structure is a reconstruction. Kasba Ganpati, close by, is regarded as the presiding Ganpati of the city and is the first of the manache Ganpati during the festival.

Times are for a reasonably paced visit, not a walk-through. Adding up the ones you want gives a realistic picture of whether it is a half day or a full day — and whether it is honestly two days.

Compared with the Government Pune Darshan Bus

The PMPML city sightseeing bus covers a fixed selection of the sites above on a set route and a set schedule. It costs considerably less and works well for a solo traveller who is content to follow the timetable. Where a private cab differs is that you choose which of these places to include, how long to spend at each, and when to start and finish — and you are picked up from your door rather than from a boarding point.

Suggested Pune to Malvan Sightseeing Itineraries

Full Day — 8 Hours / 80 km

Eight to ten stops with a lunch break, and the option we most often recommend. Covers the historical sites, the principal temples and a museum without leaving anyone exhausted.

Full Day with Sinhagad Fort — 8 Hours / 80 km, extended

A city morning followed by an afternoon at Sinhagad, roughly 30 km from the city, where Tanaji Malusare fell in the battle of 1670. Note that the fort involves either a climb or a drive up a narrow ghat road, and that the extra distance normally takes the trip past the 80 km package limit.

Temple Circuit

For guests whose interest is devotional rather than historical: Dagdusheth, Kasba Ganpati, Saras Baug, Parvati, Chatushrungi, Bhuleshwar. Can be arranged as a half or full day.

For a full day of repeated getting in and out, an Innova or Ertiga is usually worth the difference over a sedan — particularly with elderly passengers, for whom the higher seat and wider door opening matter more than the extra fare.

Planning Your Day

A few things we have learned from running these tours over two decades:

  • Start early. An 8 AM start gets you through the temples before the queues build and the traffic thickens. A 10 AM start costs you roughly an hour of standing.
  • Check what is closed. Museums and some monuments have weekly closing days. We verify these when confirming your itinerary rather than discovering them at the gate.
  • Avoid Ganesh Chaturthi week for the temples unless the festival is precisely why you came. Dagdusheth during those ten days is an experience, but not a short one.
  • October to March is the comfortable season. April and May are hot for a day of walking; the monsoon makes Parvati and Sinhagad slippery, though the city looks its best.
  • Eight stops is a full day. Guests who try to fit twelve in usually enjoy none of them properly. We will say so when we see it in a proposed itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Call or WhatsApp us with your date, group size and preferred start time. We send back a suggested itinerary with a fixed fare, usually within the hour. Confirmation is issued in writing with the vehicle type and reporting time, and driver details reach you the evening before travel. A day or two of notice is comfortable; weekends and the festival season need longer.

You set them. Half-day tours run four hours and full-day tours eight hours, and the clock starts at your pickup rather than at a fixed departure time. We recommend an 8 AM start — it gets you through the temples before the queues build and the traffic thickens. Later starts are available, as are evening tours for guests who only want to visit the temples.

Fares are fixed packages by vehicle and duration, not metered. The package covers the vehicle, chauffeur and fuel for the stated hours and kilometres. Entry tickets, parking and any guide fee are paid at actuals during the day. Extra hours and kilometres beyond the package are charged at our published rate, which is confirmed to you before the trip begins.

A full day is eight hours and 80 kilometres, covering eight to ten sites with a lunch break. A typical day runs Shaniwar Wada, Lal Mahal, Kasba Ganpati, Dagdusheth, Pataleshwar, lunch, Aga Khan Palace, Shinde Chhatri, Parvati and Saras Baug. The itinerary is a suggestion, not a fixed route — you are free to change it.

The PMPML bus costs considerably less and suits a solo traveller on a budget who is happy to follow a timetable. A private cab gives you door pickup instead of a fixed boarding point, your own start time, as long as you want at each stop, and the freedom to add or drop places on the day. For families, elderly parents, or anyone likely to want a break, the cab is usually worth the difference.

Comfortably, eight to ten. It is possible to do more, but it turns into a day of arriving and leaving rather than seeing anything. We would rather build you a good eight-stop day than a rushed twelve.

No. The package covers the vehicle, chauffeur and fuel. Entry tickets, camera charges, guide fees and parking are paid at actuals during the day.

Our chauffeurs know the city well and will tell you about the sites, but they are not licensed guides. Where you want a formal guided commentary, we can arrange a licensed guide at additional cost — mention it at booking.

Yes. That is the main advantage of a private cab. Additions beyond the package kilometre limit are charged at the extra-km rate.

October to March. Pleasant temperatures and clear conditions for the hill viewpoints. April and May are hot for a full day out, and the monsoon, while beautiful, makes the climbs at Parvati and Sinhagad slippery.

Yes, and it is one of our more common bookings. Tell us at booking and we will build an itinerary that avoids the longer climbs, keeps drives short between stops, and allows a rest break. An Innova is the sensible vehicle choice.

Yes. It adds roughly 60 km round trip and normally takes the day past the 80 km package limit, so extra kilometres apply. It also involves either a climb or a drive up a narrow ghat road, which is worth knowing in advance.

Yes. Tempo Travellers and Urbania are available for groups, and we handle school picnic transport regularly through the November to February season.
